Have a blessed
New Year From the O'Dell's |
|
We had a very Merry Christmas at
the Nest.
I pray that you also had a wonderful Christmastime
despite the snow some of you faced. It has been an
incredibly busy time for us as the new directors. We
know that God has called all of us to do this work
and that He is in control and He has a plan for all
involved in this ministry. We know that we will face
many challenges and obstacles along the journey.
However, we remain faithful as we see God’s hand at
work every day.
Presently we have
37 children at Robin’s Nest ranging in age from 1
month to 17 years old. Two children are getting
close to joining their permanent families. We are
very pleased to report that the Child Development
Agency (CDA) is working on a new system to help
expedite the process of having these children placed
in a permanent home in a more timely fashion. They
are in the final stages of creating an adoption
Registry of children who are available for adoption
(or fostering if you happen to live here in
Jamaica).
We have a New Van!
This is a huge blessing and an answered prayer! It
is my understanding that the church that helped us
with this purchase raised the money by selling
mittens made from old sweaters! It is amazing to
see what God can do…even with old sweaters. We were
able to purchase a 2003 Toyota Hiace in very good
condition and we a good price as well.
I am very pleased
to report that we will have a new playground for the
older kids to play on very soon. The Z-Foundation is
here to do the actual construction of the
playground. The Z-Foundation was founded by Shaun
and Sally Weimer after their son Zach was killed in
a zip line accident about 2 years ago. I first met
them on July 11th when they brought a big
birthday cake up the Nest to celebrate Zach’s
birthday for the first time without him. When the
vision of a new playground for the older ones was
shared, Sally’s eyes lit up. This will be a huge
blessing for these kids to have some fun and
recreation.
The water project
is on track with a new water collection site,
holding tank and pump house. We hope to be pumping
water up to the nest by March. Please pray that
this project goes smoothly. We have had very little
rain in November and December. The locals say that
we are in a drought. The current community spring
has gone almost dry and has forced us to purchase
all of our water for the past two months. Pray for
rain to fill our tanks! The road is better than it
was six months ago but the marl (or fill gravel)
that was used to patch the road is slowly washing
away. Please pray that the Jamaican government or
some other agency will partner with us to repair and
pave the road! |

Prayer Requests
-
The children of Robin’s Nest - to
know God’s Love and to have a sense of
self-worth that comes from being a child of God.
Keep them healthy, safe and full of joy.
-
The staff - They all work very
hard using their spiritual gifts to work with
these special children. It is difficult work as
most of you know. Lord, give them hope, joy and
love all year long.
-
Michelle – Pray for her new
calling to take of a widow. She is missed and
dearly loved here in Jamaica.
-
Smoother roads.
-
Assistant Directors.
-
Funds - to finish Jake’s House
and provide a permanent place for the Director’s
to live.
-
New sources of funding in 2010.
-
Missionary teams coming in 2010
to serve at the Nest.
-
Relief
organizations – May their “cup runneth over” as
they provide support to Jamaica.
-
Our family - Pray for our
older daughter to find a friend and not be so
homesick, for our son to stay safe, make good
choices and not pick up bad habits. We pray
they can get into the school we have found for
them. Pray for us to have the strength, wisdom,
and perseverance needed for 2010 and stay
connected to the Vine and produce good fruit!
We praise God for
all of you who support the Nest in prayer and
giving.
May God grant you a healthy and prosperous New Year.
Peace and
Blessings from Jamaica. Joel & Angie O’Dell

THE HOT MAMA
MITTEN MAKERS
As
our team returned from the Nest last year, we all agreed on three
things. Our trip had been great, we loved the kids and the Nest
needed a new van! We prayed about how to raise the money it would
take to buy them a new one. My daughter-in-law and I had been sewing
mittens out of old sweaters. Selling them at church had raised
enough money for one of the ladies to pay for her mission trip. So,
a small group of us started meeting at church on Wednesday
afternoons. We put out the word that we would love any old sweaters
people would be willing to donate and fleece for the liners. Soon we
had more workers, materials and excitement. Because of our ages, we
called ourselves the "Hot Mama Mitten Makers"!
As it got closer to Christmas we were able to sell the mittens on
Sunday mornings at church. Our members were excited to help support
the Nest AND get a great pair of mittens for just $20.00. They were
also happy to learn more about the kids at the Nest and catch the
vision for a new van. God is good. When He wants to accomplish
something he just needs us to take the first step in obedience and
then watch as He moves. This past week, just one year since we
returned from our trip, the Nest bought their van with our mitten
money. So now, we are continuing to sell mittens hoping to earn
enough to buy a truck for them too!
Friendships have grown, new friends made, ministry done, laughter,
tears and prayers have been poured out over the mittens all the
while we've worked. God has accomplished MUCH more than just raising
money to buy a van. We are willing to share our pattern with anyone
that wants to have the fun we've had. I think we've made over 1000
pairs, so have gotten quite good at them! Making them is great fund
raiser to help raise money for Robins Nest and the children.
(We at Robin’s
Nest are so grateful to the “Mitten Makers” and would love to hear
what other churches have done for creative fundraisers. God bless
their work and thank you! The new “used” van is pictured below with
the children.)

MERRY
CHRISTMAS FROM THE O’DELL’S
As the holiday season approaches, we are in prayer that
you and yours have a Merry Christmas. We are confident God will
provide abundantly all that you have requested and need in the
season to come. In our “new life,” we are prepared that the holiday
season will be much different than seasons past as our service to
the children of Jamaica is our greatest gift and blessing.
The gift we desire most this year is that you continue
to lift our family up in prayer. We have struggled through the past
couple of months with much sickness and despair. We know God has
walked us through every incident and trial.

YOUR CHRISTMAS
GIFT TO THE NEST DOUBLED

We are very
grateful to those of you who supported Robin’s Nest on “Give to the
Max Day” through GiveMN.
We raised $24,000 which is a start to getting us back on track.
Over $14 million was raised that day. The matching funds will be
minimal but every dollar helps, and we are still very grateful.
Are
you ready for the next BIG news? When a donor saw the news about matching
funds for GiveMN, he and his family decided to match any donations
in December dollar for dollar up to $20,000. We pray that many of
you will respond to this matching fund drive. December is the month
that the most donations come in and we need your help now in order
to continue to provide the care for the children of Jamaica at our
present level. Go to the
Gifting Form or click the
“donate now” piggy bank at the top of the page to give by credit
card. The donations are safe and secure.

A message from Michelle:
I just wanted
to share with you about the new adventure God has provided for me.
I have always been called religious and disliked it. I try to tell
people that it is all about a relationship, not a religion. Then
just before I was going to Jamaica, I read the verse in James 1:27:
"True religion is this; that you care for the widows and
orphans." That verse was a confirmation to me as I went to care
for orphans. Now I will fulfill the end of that verse because I am
going to be serving a widow and living in her home in Iowa. I
started after Thanksgiving and am very excited. Life just seems to
keep falling into place. Praise God for all of His blessings!
Merry Christmas and God bless, Michelle
Robinette
P.S. I will still
be available on weekends to speak to churches and area groups so do
not hesitate to get in touch with Kris Killian: k.killian@att.net |

CHILDREN ADOPTED OR BEING ADOPTED FROM THE NEST
In this Christmas newsletter,
we’d like to share the stories
of a few children that have
left the “Nest” or will be soon.
We praise God for this,
all glory to Him alone! |
 |
MARTIKA JOY
Martika is in kindergarten this year. She's enjoying
soaking up reading and writing skills and math, too. She
has had six visits from the tooth fairy already and we're
sure she will have her two new front teeth for Christmas!
We've counted and Martika has over 40 cousins in her new
extended family. She's a JOY - just like her middle name.
It was hard waiting all those years for her adoption to be
processed, but we're excited to have her as part of our
family - celebrating her second year with us. |
|
NOAH
 |
Noah is almost 6 years old and doing great. He is now
walking with crutches (sticks) and is working on getting
faster and can go about 40 yards before he gets tired. He
will need back bracing coming up in February which will
limit some of his mobility, but in the long run will help
him. Noah has really settled in as a permanent part of our
family. His 3 older brothers really watch out for him and
love to read and play with him. He is now a Vikings fan and
loves to watch anytime football is on. Keith & Beth |
NIA
 |
Nia is in second grade.
Nia and her classmates are enjoying the fall term where in
addition to studying math, reading and spelling, they have
had the opportunity to study Central Park and made a number
of field trips. Continuing her love of the water which
began as a toddler at the Robin's Nest pool and Sunday
afternoon trips to Doctor's Cave beach, Nia is quickly
moving up the swimming levels at the local YMCA. She
also began cello lessons this year which she enjoys very
much. Nia wishes Miss Michelle and the children, staff
and friends of Robin's Nest a Blessed Christmas and a Happy
and Health New Year!
|
|
PETER
 |
Noah’s parents also now have the adoption license for
Peter! We were down to Kingston with Peter in November to
submit all the paperwork and will hopefully get his Visa
physical and Visa interview appointment set up any day
now. It was great to be able to spend 4 days with Peter
and get to know him and for him to get to know us. It
would be great to get him home for Christmas, but we know it
is all in God's timing so we continue to trust in Him.
Merry Christmas! Keith & Beth |
TIMAR
|
Timar just turned 9 and this
school year is going better than last as he adjusts better
to life in America. He loves to read, even 600 page
books. He enjoys going to Good News Club at school.
He plays football (got his first trophy as you can see) and
is an avid fan of all sports, especially basketball.
He is a dear grandson. We just had a baking and
cleaning night and he baked a pan of bars all by himself.

AKIEM
 |
We met Akiem for the first time about April 2007. He was a cutie,
and I can still hear him with his thick Jamaican accent asking what
was that as he pointed to a helicopter on the new pjs I had brought
for him. The moment when he stole my heart was when he received a
tray of animal crackers from one of the ladies in the kitchen, and
he brought it outside and handed it around before he ever claimed
his own. I love his servant's heart.
His younger sister (by 2 days), is the messiest little girl
ever, and he is constantly offering to help her clean up...even
after she tells him he needs to get out, 'cause "this is a girl's
room, and NO BOYS ALLOWED!" This is usually when she wants to watch
a princess movie and he always suggests Spiderman or Scooby-Doo...
Akiem fits into our family as if he was born into it. Our
adoption process took just shy of 2 years, and a lot of calls, trips
to visit... Our 7 year old son passed away December 26th, 2008, and
we went to Jamaica a couple weeks later just to get away. We got a
call barely a week after on January 26th, 2009 that he was ready to
go to court. On January 28th, 2009, He was ours.
October 8th, 2009, we left Jamaica for the first time as a
family. It had taken about 8 months for his immigration documents to
be processed. We had been staying in a house we had purchased
intending at some point to return to Jamaica permanently.
Within two months, Akiem visited, or passed through about 12
states. It was so much fun to see the wonder of this country through
his eyes. There is never a dull moment with 2 five year olds, in a
homeschooling family!

SHEILA
 |
Sheila
has been doing great! She is currently 8 years old and in
third grade! She’s doing well in school and is just a joy
to be around! It is clear she was indeed the missing puzzle
piece in our family. She and her brother get along nicely
most days, and the other days they are just like any other
siblings – pushing each other’s buttons! They are very
protective of one another though, which is nice to see.
Soccer is Sheila’s sport of choice with goalie being her
favorite position! Sheila sings in the kid’s choir and
participates in WOW (Worship on Wednesdays) at church. She
spends most of the rest of her time trying to convince us to
get a dog. I think she’s checked out every book in the
school library about dogs, caring for dogs, choosing a dog,
etc. Right now she is content with the “multitude” of
stuffed animal dogs in her room. We love our little girl
with all our hearts and are so thankful to Michelle and the
staff for giving her such great care and a chance! God is
good and knew what he was doing when he placed Sheila in
their care! Mike, Erika, Ray & Sheila

JUST
ANOTHER LEG ON
AARON’S JOURNEY
 |
Aaron's
last 12 months have been uneventful medically - praise God.
He has grown taller and gained weight so has moved up a size
in clothes. The doctor feels he has reached or is near the
end of his growth cycle so is about 50 lb and 49 inches. He
will possibly gain a little more weight or grow another inch
but Aaron will always be "our little man". In
school they are working on making Aaron as independent as he
can be. With some coaxing and a lot of persistent Aaron can
kneel in front of his wheel chair, stand himself up, turn
around and push himself into the seat. He knows when they
say "wheels" at school; he tries to push on the wheels to
make it go. He has not yet accomplished the propulsion part
of it but when he does, lookout world. Aaron is much more
responsive, acknowledging people when they enter the room
with a look their way, sometimes a smile and giggle. He
loves being with the other kids and when seeing them away
from school enjoys all the "Hi Aaron" greetings they give
him. He's almost always happy and is a true joy to have in
our lives. God's blessings to you this Christmas season and
may you be blessed as much as we have been blessed.

ZOE
 |
We are still in
the waiting process. We have been blessed to have been able
to visit Zoe on 3 different occasions this year. Our last
trip with Zoe was by far the best trip we have had with her
and we realized how much our previous trips have helped Zoe
bond with us. We will always be grateful for the amazing
work that Michelle and others did with Zoe when she arrived
at the Nest with the severe attachment trauma she had
suffered. Seeing where Zoe is at today is truly a miracle.
“… Let us
run with patience the race that is set before us.”
- Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV)
We miss her
more and more every day and being "closer" to the end only
makes the waiting that much more difficult. I cannot lie
and say that it has been easy, but the Lord has sustained us
and we know we can persevere through whatever comes our way.
Thanks for your continued support and prayer,
Ryan and Mikyla. |

Wheelchair IAN’s Adoption Story
After 1 ˝ years
of waiting and doing a lot of paper work, our Ian is now at
home and getting a taste of winter. “Wheelchair Ian” is
now 9 but still very much the same boy with cerebral palsy
who possesses a sweet spirit and captivating smile that
defies his physical condition. He was placed at Robin’s
Nest when he was 18-months old. As we got to know Ian, we
saw that God had planted an amazing spirit into this
physically challenged. Ian came home on September 12. Ian
has adapted very well. His sweet spirit continues and his
smile melts all those he encounters. We continue to be
amazed at how God has blessed us and others through Ian.
His spirit, despite his physical handicap, is never
dampened. By allowing God to change our plans and our lives
we could reach out to a young boy who did not choose
cerebral palsy. Will Ian ever walk? Will he ever talk? We
have no idea, but we trust God that we have done the right
thing for us and for Ian. Who knows what He has in store
for us next?!?! - Tom & Angela |

TRIP REPORT –
CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH; LAKE ELMO
Twelve youth and
two adults from Christ Lutheran Church visited Robin’s Nest
Children’s Home Oct 13-20, 2009. While there we dug a trench for
the playground fence, washed clothes and dishes, painted, fixed
toys, did gardening and yard work and helped daily with general
maintenance. The highlight of our day was playing with the older
children when they got home from school! The highlight of our week
was our day at the beach with many of them after we attended church
on Sunday. All of our team was blessed by meeting the children at
the Nest. Our young men and women put their all into this trip and
have been changed forever. They are more appreciative of their
families and their lives in general. And I can say for certain that
they would all like to go back one day to help serve the kids and
staff at the Nest by continuing the work of the Lord - Michele.

GIVING TO HONOR
OR REMEMBER SOMEONE
One of the
exciting ways to give to Robin’s Nest is by giving a gift in honor
or in memory of someone special to you or to wish them a “Merry
Christmas” or “Happy Birthday.” It’s the perfect gift for those
that have everything or when you can’t come up with any ideas. We
will then send a card to the person you wish telling them of your
gift, memorial, or honorarium. We have even had a donation as a
wedding gift and a bride has also donated. Use your creativity!
Many of us do not need another thing so a gift to the Nest would be
a great way to honor an individual. During this Holiday season at
the end of 2009, we give thanks for the following honorariums.
Memorials in
memory of:
Jacob Anderson,
Zach Weimer, & Rose Kuebker
Happy Birthday to:
Kathy Oys
In honor of:
Lee & Ona
Gardenier (1st wedding anniversary); Karen Warner (from
her staff)
David Finke; & Welcome Women, Trinity Lutheran, Jeffers, MN; Bryan
